A Taste of Bibimbap

When we went to Seoul City our tour guide brought us to a special Korean restaurant where they serve good bibimbap. Hubby was not too impress when he saw the picture of bibimbap, so he ordered a korean barbecue instead...lol! And I had bibimbap for the first time! I thought it's very appetizing and I don't mind ordering it again. If you never had Bibimbap before, you should try it at your nearest Korean restaurant. For more Food Trip Friday entries, you should click the button above.

What is bibimbap anyway? Well, Bibimbap is a popular Korean dish. The word literally means "mixed rice." Bibimbap is served as a bowl of warm white rice topped with namul (sautéed and seasoned vegetables) and gochujang (chili pepper paste). A raw or fried egg and sliced meat (usually beef) are common additions. The ingredients are stirred together thoroughly just before eating. It can be served either cold or hot.

Vegetables commonly used in bibimbap include julienned cucumber, zucchini, mu (daikon), mushrooms, doraji (bellflower root), and gim, as well as spinach, soybean sprouts, and gosari (bracken fern stems). Dubu (tofu), either plain or sautéed, or a leaf of lettuce may be added, or chicken or seafood may be substituted for beef. For visual appeal, the vegetables are often placed so that adjacent colors complement each other.

Looks inviting! It's similar to Khao Pad (fried rice) here in Thailand. I like the idea of having lots of vegetables but in here they use carrots, green peas, sweet corn, mushroom, etc. and meat, seafoods and/or egg with it. Cucumber is commonly used in Korean cuisine even with their soup but Thais eat it raw usually. I think it's mainly the vegetables such as the cucumber, spinach and sprouted soya that make Korean fried rice different from Thai fried rice. My kids love to eat vegetables if mixed with fried rice so I patiently cook it for them. Like your Korean style, I also use either beef or chicken but most Thais use pork, chicken or seafoods and usually with egg, too. And so spicy, wheewww!!!
Thanks for sharing this dish. I may modify my fried rice - mixture of Thai and Korean sytles, hahaha! I may try spinach and sprouted soya. Oks ba?
