Tomatillos (Husk Tomatoes)

Have you ever heard of Tomatillos before? It is a plant of the tomato family, related to the cape gooseberry, bearing small, spherical and green or green-purple fruit of the same name. Tomatillos, referred to as green tomato (Spanish: tomate verde) in Mexico, are a staple in Mexican cuisine.
My SILs from Nicaragua and Mexico taught me how to make salsa verde. I know how to make it but I never tried making it at home yet because hubby doesn't like salsa verde. Salsa verde is so simple and yet so addictively good! Just dip your tacos, corn chips or burritos...and viola!

The tomatillo fruit is surrounded by a paper-like husk formed from the calyx. As the fruit matures, it fills the husk and can split it open by harvest. The husk turns brown, and the fruit can be any of a number of colors when ripe, including yellow, red, green, or even purple. Tomatillos are the key ingredient in fresh and cooked Latin American green sauces.

WOW! I never thought that this kind of fruit is edible. We have a lot of this in our backyard in the province but I thought it's just a weed or something.

Thanks for sharing!

Hello Pretty Dhemz! I am back... at least trying to get back to blog hopping and wow! It's my first time to hear about this tomatillos. Sounds interesting. I think we do not have that kind of tomato here in Sweden.

Have you tried cooking with it?

Hugs!!!

First time I ever heard of this tomatillos or green tomatoes. I never even knew they exist, lol. I wonder how they taste. Are they similar to red tomatoes in taste? They must be good as salsa or dip. Thanks for the informative post. I learned something new from you again. Thanks teacher. God bless you all always.
